SHAZA LEIGH OWB - BIOGRAPHY
Shaza Leigh OWB is one of Australia’s most prolific and respected singer/songwriters, with over 350 songs recorded by both Australian and International artists. Her remarkable contributions to music were formally recognised in 2020 with an incredible honour, bestowed upon very few entertainers, when she was awarded The Order of The Wattle Blossom (OWB) at the Native Australian Awards. Citation: "For excellence in the writing and performance of music reflecting Australia’s unique cultural heritage, and love for our Native Land.”
Throughout her career, Shaza has received numerous Golden Guitar Award nominations, along with countless personal songwriting accolades. She has consistently produced chart topping songs for herself and others over an impressive 37 year career, with winning entries across nearly every major awards structure in Australian country music including 6 National Artist of the Year on Radio awards, 6 times National Songwriter of the Year, 3 times National Composer of the Year at the National Songwriter Awards and several Australian Bush Ballad Awards.
Her songwriting talent transcends genre boundaries, with success in bush ballads, classic country, inspirational, contemporary, gospel, country rock, popular, and easy listening radio-friendly music. A commercially astute composer and a powerful lyricist, Shaza possesses a rare ability to craft songs that resonate deeply with audiences. SHAZA LEIGH - 2006 - Block 4, position 207 HANDS Of FAME
1967: Shaza Leigh was born on May 5 in Proserpine, North Queensland and grew up on the family cane
and cattle property in the Whitsundays.
1970-80s: The eldest of four siblings, Shaza enjoyed a well-rounded rural childhood complete with an extended family. Shaza was an accomplished scholar, musician and sportswoman (winning both Junior and Senior Sportswoman of the year at high school), deferred university and decided not to pursue tertiary education when given the opportunity to follow her dream into show business.
1977-1980: Residency Whitsunday Village, Airlie Beach, at 10 years of age entertained tourists every Sunday night with local identity Banjo Jack and retired international musicians. Loved English and poetry and commenced songwriting at 12, writing Before I Go (later recorded on Shaza’s 3rd Album followed by an instrumental version by Barry Thornton & Lindsay Butler).
1981-1987: Formed family band Country Conspiracy with uncle, John Kilcullen, Avon & Megan gigging in Central and North Queensland whilst still at school. A few years later Col Edmonds and Robert Ferris joined group.
1983: Winner Charter Towers Country Music Festival, Open Gospel & Junior. Mackay - Nick Erby Encouragement Award.
1984: Winner of the Coca-Cola Locomotive Hotel Talent Quest in Tamworth including the EP recording package with Jeff & Rod McCormacks Rumbalara studio. Winner CCMA National Jamboree Best Young Talent backed by The Lindsay Butler Band.
1986: Damaged vocal chords and was classically trained to breath correctly and sing again by Lorraine Smith from Sydney Conservatorium, retired in Mackay. Naturally several classical mentors tried to encourage an opera career for her then 5 octave range. The deep desire to be a singer/songwriter prevailed.
1987: Assistant Manager ICA Mackay (Indoor Cricket Arenas) - R/Up State Titles - Selected to play for Qld at National Titles and left everything to tour around Australia with Brian Young’s Sound Of Country Music Road show as the female singer and bass player.
1988 -1993: Accepted partnership offer and paid out all existing debts, bought new equipment and vehicles plus re-branded the show as The Brian Young Show. Employed numerous country musicians and artists, including the late Jimmy Little, to tour and experience the remotest aboriginal communities of outback Australia annually.
1990: Recorded and co-produced debut album, Australia’s first contemporary country rock album, with renowned country Producer Lindsay Butler. Released Walking Through My Mind resulting in first national hit single, I’m Not Sorry.
1991: Had major outback hits in the lands with 2 Areonga Desert Tigers songs, Seasons Coming and Wamma Wanti (recorded in Pitjantjatjara).
1992: Released and co-produced Reflections On Love. R/Up in Starmaker - lost coin toss to winner Warren Derwent. Released hit singles Too Close To Home and Been This Way Before.
1993: Dissolved partnership in Brian Young Show leaving ‘Youngie’ financially set with property and fully operational business, one of the most successful roadshows in Australian country music history. Joined tour with Lindsay Butler, Brian Letton and Barry Thornton.
1994: Lindsay and Shaza formed their new partnership and The LBS Music Group was created. Opened Lindsay Butler Studios on Bridge St in Tamworth, Established the LBS Music label, The LBS Distribution Service and introduced The LBS Country Collection; Radio Sampler designed to annually promote Country Artists released on LBS. Debut finalist nomination New Talent, Golden Guitars for hit single Let Him Down Easy.
1995: Released and co-produced Out of a Shadow. Hit single Don’t Call Me Sweetheart. Bought the LBS Complex at Moonbi, just outside of Tamworth. Created Pindaroo Music - specialist indigenous label to record and promote The Benning Brothers Band for Sir Barry Benning. Recorded, promoted and toured with Rex Dallas and Lindsay Butler. Started ‘The LBS News’ quickly becoming one of the largest data bases of devoted country music fans in Australian Country Music. The Butlers financed LBS album for Rex Dallas - Songs Of My Country.
1996: Started The LBS Open Day at Moonbi Complex. Shaza and Lindsay toured with Reg Poole and The Lindsay Butler Band. Career path development and artist branding with Tom Maxwell to launch recording career. The Butlers financed the first of 15, of 20, LBS albums released for Brian Letton.
1997: Career path development and artist branding with Jeff Brown to launch recording career.
1998: Released and co-produced self titled album Shaza Leigh including national hits Woman At The Wheel, Darlin’ and Bushgirl’s Dreams - Top 10 nomination Golden Guitars.
1999: Married Lindsay Butler in Tamworth. Performed on International Show in Nashville as part of Fanfair with Terry Gordon, Lindsay Butler and Charlie Landsborough. Finalist Top10 nomination Golden Guitar Awards Female Vocalist of the Year. Independent Country Music Awards - Most Popular Female Entertainer of the Year. Stan Coster Memorial Bush Ballad Awards - Song of the Year.
2000: Released Just For You. Presented with the Cedar Hat Award at Kempsey’s Country Music festival for her help in developing Australian talent. Finalist Nomination Golden Guitar Awards - Bush Ballad Song of the Year. Expanded LBS into Qld purchasing Robina Complex. Toured with Lindsay Butler and Brian Letton again, with The Reunion Tour successfully filling auditoriums all over Australia. Career development for Bob Easter’s debut album Land of the Big Blue Sky, in conjunction with Drover Music management. Career path development, artist branding and The Butlers financed and released on LBS, Tracy Coster’s first bush ballad album, Bush Baby.
2001: Inducted into the Wall of Fame – a tribute to the Women of Country Music – for outstanding achievement and contribution to the country music industry. Originally presented by the South Tamworth Bowling Club, the wall is now housed at the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame. Released first DVD The Early Years with Lindsay Butler and Brian Letton. Career path development and artist branding with Graham Rodger to launch recording career. Career development for Melissa Bajric in conjunction with Drover Music management.
2002: The Butlers son Lachlan was born. Released first DVD The Early Years with Lindsay Butler and Brian Letton. Stan Coster Memorial Bush Ballad Awards - Female Vocalist of the Year and Collaboration of the Year with Brian Letton. Financed Spirit Of The Outback album for Terry Gordon and Working Class Man album for Shane Hogan.
2003: Released My Way of Life. TSA Gospel Song of the Year Hard Calloused Hands co-written with Brian Letton and Roy Sinnamon. Received Akubra Hat Award at Kempsey All Star Country Music Awards - honours industry identities working behind the scenes to promote and preserve Australian Country Music. Australian Country Recording Awards - Female Country Album of the Year in Sydney. Started Kross Kut Records label with brother, Lindsay Waddington and installed studio equipment for ‘Waddo’ to kick start his producers career to further promote more talent than LBS could handle. Career development and artist branding for Lindsay Waddington’s career; The Butlers financed Lindsay Waddington’s debut album - Cool Change and released on LBS.
2004: Released The Songwriter. Purchased and opened LBS Complex on Goonoo Goonoo Rd, Tamworth. Established The Australian Country Music Wall of Honour. Australian Country Recording Awards - Female Country Album of the Year. Inducted to the Australian Country Music Wall of Honour at LBS Studios. TSA Song of the Year Be The Best That You Can Be, co-written with Leanne King. Finalist Nomination Golden Guitar Awards - Bush Ballad Song of the Year. Career path development and artist branding with Anita Ree to launch recording career and The Butlers financed her album.
2005: Queensland Gold Medallion Awards – Female Vocalist of the Year. The Tamworth Industry Award recognises Tamworth identities working behind the scenes for the betterment of the local CM industry. Career path development and artist branding with Ashley Cook to launch recording career. The Butlers financed Ian Quinn’s LBS album Following The Footsteps.
2006: Released Strength Within. Launched The Queensland CM Awards in Toowoomba. Queensland Gold Medallion Awards – Female Vocalist of the Year. Inducted into the Hands of Fame, Tamworth. Finalist Nomination Golden Guitar Awards - Bush Ballad Song of the Year. Toured with Lindsay and our rebranded band, The Butler Boys, Lindsay Waddington, Neil Buttsworth and Geoff Sidebottom. Coordinated LBS Music’s 100th album release 100 Not Out. The Butlers financed Noel Parlane’s debut Australian album - No Limits.
2007: Queensland Gold Medallion Awards – Female Vocalist of the Year. TSA Gospel Song of The Year, Strength Within. First international #1 hit with Teach Your Children. Finalist Nomination Golden Guitar Awards - Bush Ballad Song of the Year. Built and opened Butlers Auditorium at the LBS Complex, Tamworth - specialist function room to service country music events and artists during The Tamworth Country Music Festival - featured Live broadcast to Nashville CMR for our festival roundup, presented by Daryl Kirkup. Started The Mulwala Country Music Spectacular with Ron and Jan Morgan. Started The Texas Country Music Roundup with relatives, Evelyn and John Rigney. Secured a partially sponsored Motorhome as a tour bus and mobile recording studio with the support of Ray McCoy. Ashley Cook joined our touring show. The Butlers financed final Brian Young album - The Last Of The Travelling Showmen.
2008: Queensland Gold Medallion Awards – Female Vocalist of the Year. Finalist Nomination Golden Guitar Awards - Bush Ballad Song of the Year. Established the Tamworth Recording Suite in the LBS Complex, with Greg Williams as house producer. Introduced new labels Advance Music for alternate and contemporary country music and Matilda Music for traditional custom releases. Appeared on The Footy Show performing the tribute song for Andrew Johns, Hey Joey. Signed international publishing agreement with Pegasus Music with partner in Aussie Independent Music, Rhonda Sinclair. Career path development and artist branding with Greg Bain to launch recording career.
2009: Released Seasons. Gold Medallion Media Awards – National Female Artist of the Year and Qld Female Vocalist of the Year. TSA Contemporary Song of the Year, Strum co-written with Manfred Vijars. Performed the national anthem at Tamworth Country Music Festival Opening Concert. Victorian Bushfire Appeal Concert at Salvation Army. Peggy Gilchrist became a permanent member of our band and Brian Young joined our national tour to farewell his fans when he was too unwell to take his own show on the road any longer.
2010: Released The Journey. Gold Medallion Media Awards - National Female Artist of the Year and Qld Female Vocalist of the Year. TSA Traditional Bush Ballad of the Year, Sorry Mate co-written with Ben Jacobs. Hosted The Drover Music 10th Anniversary Concert at Butlers Auditorium to help celebrate our close association, mentoring, producing and distributing all Drover artists and albums for a decade. Established Musicorp Mastering. Re-branded band to The Butler Showband when Peggy Gilchrist (piano & vocals), Ashley Cook (bass & vocals) became partners in the touring show and Greg Williams joined on drums & vocals. Invited to perform at Umawa in The Pitjantjatjara Lands by Trevor Adamson and the people. Career path development and artist branding with Rachel Jillett, Dale Duncan and Peggy Gilchrist to launch recording careers. The Butlers financed the debut album for Peggy Gilchrist.
2011: Started Youtube Channel. Gold Medallion Media Awards - National Female Artist of the Year, Qld Female Vocalist of the Year and National Group or Vocal Collaboration of the Year with Dale Duncan. Finalist Nomination Golden Guitar Awards - Bush Ballad Song of the Year. Performed on P&O Cruise to Vanuatu, Liffou and Noumea, taking a tour group in conjunction with Chris Watson Travel. Proudly sponsored entertainment for Timbumburi State School Centenary dinner.
2012: Finalist Nomination Golden Guitar Awards - Bush Ballad Song of the Year. Launched ButlerGilchrist Productions (specialist CM film production and graphics department - partnership with Peggy Gilchrist). Released At Home DVD with Lindsay Butler, Ashley Cook and Peggy Gilchrist. Gold Medallion Media Awards - Qld Female Vocalist of the Year and National Collaboration of the Year with Noel Parlane. Peoples Choice Awards, Vocal Event of the Year with Dale Duncan for co-written hit single with Ben Jacobs Walking In My Shoes. Career path development and guidance with Jason Owen through his X-Factor experience. Project was happily aborted when Jason was successful on the show and became committed to Sony.
2013: Released Just A Dream Away. Gold Medallion Media Awards - Qld Female Vocalist of the Year and National Collaboration of the Year with Justin Standley. Canberra Country Songwriting Awards co-written with Billy Wye and Dale Duncan, Best Country Song, The Heart of Australia and Best Traditional Song, Springtime On Monaro. Career path development, songwriting guidance and artist branding with Justin Standley to launch professional country music recording career after his appearance on X-Factor.
2014: Gold Medallion Media Awards - National Female Artist of the Year and Qld Female Vocalist of the Year. Mike Kennedy Industry Awards - ‘Winner of 10 Gold Medallion Awards in a row’. Independent Country Music Brumby Awards - Best Inspirational Artist. Peoples Choice Award with Dale Duncan - Best Bush Ballad - The Heart Of Australia. Ashley Cook and Peggy Gilchrist made partners of our touring show. Started Texas to Tamworth with the support of Wests Entertainment Group. Career path development, songwriting and artist branding with Emma Jene to launch recording career.
2015: Released Collaborations. Independent Country Music Brumby Awards - Female Artist of the Year. Gold Medallion Media Awards - Qld Female Vocalist of the Year. Performed on first Back to The Bush Concert sponsored by The Tamworth a regional Council and presented by Dianne Lindsay and Peter Simpson at TCMF. Greg Bain joined our southern tour.
2016: Released Homeland. Display in The Australian Hall Of Fame for the official opening. Presented with a banner to celebrate our involvement with the starting of The Texas Country Music Roundup at the 10th Annual festival. Career path development and artist branding with Rachel Summerell and John Lecner to launch recording career.
2017: Released Golden Jubilee DVD, celebrating 50th birthday featuring pictorial of career highlights to 32 original songs. Purchased and opened LBS MusicLand on Whitehouse Lane Tamworth. Independent Country Music Brumby Awards - 3 songwriter awards. Gold Medallion Media Awards - National Female Artist of the Year and Qld Female Vocalist of the Year. Career path development and artist branding with Kimberley Gold to launch recording career plus special project guidance for Ann Penman and Graham Pearson.
2018: Established Traditional Country Music Awards of Australia to recognise the Top 10 Traditional Albums each year. Joined forces with a team of Tamworth industry identities to keep the 50 year old organisation, Capital Country Music Association (CCMA) going when it was set to fold. Shaza served as The Patron, offered LBS MusicLand for monthly meetings and to host The National Talent Quest and had her proposal passed to upgrade the songwriting contest to The National Songwriting Awards, immediately attracting record entries from many of the nations best writers. With cooperation from The Tamworth Regional Council, The National Jamboree was once again presented in The Tamworth Town Hall preserving the long established traditions of the CCMA, where ironically her national career began as a teenager. 2019: Released Where Our Heart Lives album and the title track was a national hit. Gold Medallion Media Awards - National Female Artist of the Year and Qld Female Vocalist of the Year. TSA Gospel Song of the Year, Part Of Our Fathers Plan co-written with Jean Darnell. Financed and Launched Oz Radio Gold - specialist internet radio station, with Peggy Gilchrist (Programme Manager) to further promote the best easy-listening Country Music released in Australia. In role as P&C President, produced the Centenary Concert for Tamworth High School with Rebecca Sullivan. Career path development, songwriting and artist branding with Carol Chaney to launch recording career.
2020: Released Our Fathers Plan - Inspirational Collaboration EP with Jean Darnell. Released hit single The Bush Is Still The Same. Closed LBS Complex Robina and consolidated Distribution service at newly opened National Office at company headquarters, LBS MusicLand. 2021: Released hit single Cutting Gems Out Of Stone and won CCMA National Songwriter of the Year plus winner CCMA National Composer of the Year for Call Of Kakadu recorded by Peggy Gilchrist. Winner Top 10 Best Female Single of the Year at Traditional CM Awards of Australia and National Artist of the Year on Radio, GMMA. Opened ‘LBS Studio 2’ at LBS MusicLand. Established Bahloo Organisation, Wellness platform for Mind, Body and Spirit including a relaxation, spiritual and inspirational music label. Branded and launched Butler Estate with son Lachlan Butler and also built, branded and launched Star Central International Radio Distribution Service to direct market music to over 10,000 radio stations around the world with business partner Peggy Gilchrist.

2023: Produced and Released Blessings album. International Female Producer of the Year @ Red Carpet Awards in Europe. Released self-penned #1 hit singles Time To Fly and Why I Love December plus #2 hit How We Love Before We Leave and wrote and co-produced Top10 hits for LBS Artists, The Great Outback with Ken Knuth & Saltbush On The Breeze with K&M Dixon (Ashley Cook), Where Our Heart Lives (Anthony Baxter) and Hill Of Tara (Peggy Gilchrist). Won CCMA National Songwriter of the Year with Hear The Angels and made a Life Member of CCMA for dedication and service to the organisation. Won Best Female Vocalist of the Year at Australian Independent Country Music Awards plus 5 Songwriter Awards and 5 Production Awards. National Female Artist of the Year on Radio and National Inspirational/Gospel Artist of the Year at GMMA. 2024: Named CCMA National Songwriter of the Year with Time To Fly and CCMA National Composer of the Year with Fraser Island. Awarded ICMA Most Popular Independent AustralianTraditional Country Artist. Dusty Boots Award for Services To Country Music. Produced and Released self-penned hit singles Safety In Their Arms, Our Fathers Choice, Walking By My Side, and wrote and co-produced #1 Hits for LBS artists, Pride Of New England (Anthony Baxter), Diamonds From The Moon (Ashley Cook), Where Banjo Wrote Matilda (Col Thomson), Bilo’s Going Strong (Ashley Cook), Call Of Kakadu (Peggy Gilchrist), Christmas Day At Hanging Rock (Anthony Baxter). Branded and launched a contemporary internet radio station, Allied International Radio for her newly established Australian Country Music Network (ACMN) also including Oz Radio Gold and Oz CMR. Launched and distributed a syndicated radio show with co-host Mark Eckel; the International Show, relayed to partner stations of the ACMN and other international stations around the world. 2025: Commissioned to write and record a song for Domestic Violence, Behind Closed Doors became a #1 hit song and her new Australian Bush Ballad single, Heartbeat Of Australia gave Shaza her second #1 in 2025. Shaza also wrote #1 hits for Peggy Gilchrist Under Burdekin Skies, with Anthony Baxter The Jumping Jackaroo and with Mike Martin The Aussie Way for Ashley Cook. Awarded Best Female Single of the Year at Traditional Country Music Awards of Australia plus 2 Songwriting Awards at Australian Country Music Awards Awards and 2 Production Awards. Country Countdown radio show was added to Nashville Country Radio, Texas Radio and other stations around the world. Produced the Unveiling of Pioneers Parade Concert for Tamworth Regional Council. Joined the Tamworth Regional Arts Advisory Committee in Tamworth to give back to the Arts in country capital Tamworth.

The LBS Music Group was established in 1994 by the newly formed partnership of Shaza Leigh Butler & Lindsay Butler. The LBS Music Group has expanded over the years to become the largest family owned and operated independent label in the world.
The LBS Music label in 2025, released its 200th album, aptly for one of the founding partners, Shaza Leigh OWB, the songs predominately written by Shaza but significantly produced by her and husband, Lindsay Butler OWB, award-winning producer and legendary guitarist.
